Mentee Spotlight – Caillou

screenshot-2016-11-11-09-55-18Caillou was one of our first matches in 2011 and is currently still in contact with his mentor, Jim. Caillou first came to TRUE Mentors seeking a mentor because, “I didn’t have a father figure at the time, and I was looking for someone to maybe fill in that role.” Almost 4 years later, although Jim has since moved, Caillou still spends time with him and is contact with him regularly. “I like that he acts as an older brother, not my parent. He gives me helpful advice when needed, and looks out for me and points out when I did something wrong. This experience was life-changing.”

Since then, Caillou has participated in our enrichment club program and is currently in teen internship program. As a teen intern, Caillou has the opportunity to work with a new mentor on Wednesday evenings and can contact his mentor for help on his business projects, school work, and time management. Caillou is currently employed at TRUE Mentors, under Program Director, Rebecca Denaro. Caillou speaks very highly of the program and believes “Other kids deserve the kind of relationship me and my mentor had. Someone they could trust and get advice from without being judged. These programs have impacted me in many ways. I learned so many things and some of the things I learned have helped me in the past, and will most likely help me in the future as well.”

Q & A with Caillou

Q: Describe how you first got involved at TRUE Mentors; first as mentee, then as a tuesday night clubs kid and now as a teen intern.

A: When I first joined True Mentors, I was matched with my mentor, and soon after we became very close. Shortly after, I began attending the Tuesday night club activity program. Currently, I am a teen intern at the program, and I get to help the kids, rather than being one of them.

Q: What new activities and experiences have you enjoyed with your mentor?

A: I’ve learned to swim, been at sport games and events, went to museums, and learned a lot about him and even myself with his guidance.

Q: Describe one of your strengths. Can you name one of your mentor’s strengths?

A: From the program, I learned some of my strengths and weaknesses. It helped me realize how much potential I had, and to be confident in myself. I’m good at communicating with people. My mentor is good at being logical and intelligent

Q: How has your mentor helped you?

A: My mentor has helped me on multiple occasions in tough situations. He helped me pick my grades up and gave me motivation when I felt as if all hope was lost.

Q: What might (someone) be surprised to know about you?

A: Someone might be surprised to know that I am a lot smarter than I may seem.

Q: What are your plans after high school?

A: After high school, I plan to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice and become a detective, or pursue engineering and become an aeronautical engineer.
