November Match of Month

A’nyah Rivera and Janelly Ramos

Janelly joined TRUE Mentors November of last year when her friend, Sylvia, introduced her. Janelly saw the programs TRUE Mentors offers and knew she wanted to be a part of this organization. Since January, Janelly has mentored A’nyah. Once Janelly came into A’nyah’s life a little over a year ago they went from friends to family. When they were first introduced, A’nyah was falling behind in school; now she is passing all of her classes! A’nyah and Janelly achieved this by having study sessions and working on homework together.

“We like to do a lot of different things. Like hanging out with family, going pumpkin picking, liberty science center, and study sessions.” Janelly Ramos

A’nyah and Janelly’s relationship shaped them for the better. They didn’t gain a mentor or mentee; they gained a family member. Janelly has helped A’nyah build her confidence and break out of her shell at school and encourages her what makes her comfortable.

“I’ve changed in skills at school because I definitely learned a lot from her. I’ve also learned to express my feelings and learned how to talk to other people. I used to be shy.” A’nyah Rivera

The best part of A’nyah and Janelly’s relationship is that they can talk to each other about anything. A’nyah mentions, “What I like most about my mentor is that we have a lot in common and she really understands me. I also like that she cares about me a lot, and about how I’m feeling, and wants me to do better in life. My mentor is special because she can really understand you and talk you through things, and cares about how you feel.”

“A’nyah is my mini-me, which is really weird sometimes like looking at a younger version of myself.” Janelly Ramos

Janelly and A’nyah enjoy going to Enrichment Clubs because the program helps “bring them together.” Currently, Janelly says their plans going forward are “improving grades, she tends to not hand in homework so we have a compromise where if she brings up her grades we’ll go see a play.” Maybe they’ll even do another karaoke night!

“If my mentor was a superhero, she would have the power to heal people with her kindness, love, care, and support. Best superpowers ever!” A’nyah Rivera
