Fun Fact: I used to be a Cadet member of the United States Air Force Auxiliary, the Civil Air Patrol. As a cadet I participated in taking flight lessons and acting as a member of a Ground Search and Rescue team.
I first got involved with True Mentors through my fraternity brothers community service program [at Stevens]. I came to find out about the program and I was absolutely amazed at how much of an impact the True Mentors program is making. I volunteer at the Tuesday Night weekly clubs for the students, and my experience always includes a lot of fun for both me and the kids.
What has surprised me the most is how quickly children can change from being the loudest one in the group, to being comfortable with showing their kind heart in a space like True Mentors. The impact has always been there. The best thing that has happened to me so far is getting to build a bond one of the mentees on Tuesday nights. We have a special handshake that we do before we break for the week. My favorite true mentors moment was losing in a chess match to a student who was a part of the program during a game night.
The TRUE Mentors community has really challenged me to empathize and think of ways to better communicate with kids in the program since they aren’t always sure of how to communicate their needs/wants with adults. I wish that all members of the Hoboken Community got a chance to see how important giving some of your time back to your neighborhood really is. If they can see what True Mentors means to the kids in the program, they’ll see why its so important that they should contribute.
Since joining TRUE Mentors, I’ve met kind and caring Hobokenites like Katie, Rebecca, and some members of the Stevens Community that I didn’t know participated in the program. And I’ve been to the Chili Cook Off, which is literally the best event I’ve ever helped out at… because of all the awesome Chili you get to try!
