Sierra Swigert may be a new volunteer, but she has already made TRUE Mentors more organized! She is our New Volunteer Orientation lead, and helps our volunteers know where to go during Tuesday night clubs! Thanks to her consistency each week, we always know our new volunteers will be ready for their roles, and we would like to thank her for her help by making her Rookie of the Year!
Sierra joined us in February of this year when she moved from Cleveland, Ohio to Hoboken. TRUE Mentors gave her a place to meet new people, form friendships, and give back to her community. Working with children also runs in her family. Her father was a guidance counselor and was always there when she needed help, or needed to ask personal questions. “I aspire to be the person my dad was for me for others who might not have had that experience or upbringing.”
It was here at TRUE Mentors she learned the true value of just two hours a week. “I have a purpose and a place in an area that seemed so different than where I came from. Working with kids such as Leanna, Serena and Christian make me look forward to Tuesday nights. I feel excited to go see them and ask how school went or what they’re looking forward to. I don’t have any younger family members so being with them makes me appreciate the important time of learning your likes and dislikes.”
While her time may seem limited, the children appreciate every moment. “I feel excited to go see them and ask how school went or what they’re looking forward to.” Through the clubs, she can better learn how to work with children and bring out their talents. “The focus of unearthing each child’s potential is the greatest way to show them how valuable they are.”
Sierra not only enjoys volunteering with the kids, she also appreciates the people in the TM community. “Every single volunteer and mentor all share the same goals and visions of impacting children is a positive way. The focus of unearthing each child’s potential is the greatest way to show them how valuable they are. I think the work everyone does is crucial in their development.”
When not mentoring or running clubs, Sierra loves running on Pier A and watching the Browns. As a Harry Potter fan, she has some wise words to share from Albus Dumbledore: “It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.” Sierra is most certainly a “doer,” and we’re glad to congratulate her as our second Rookie of the Year.
