When did you first get involved with TRUE Mentors and why?
I moved to Hoboken earlier this year and wanted to get involved with a volunteer opportunity. TRUE Mentors stoo d out as an organization, and I wanted to get involved because of their commitment and value of creating important relationships with the youth in Hoboken.
What program do you volunteer for and what was your experience like?
I volunteer for weekly enrichment clubs. Tuesday’s are now my favorite day of the week, and the experience has been rewarding and fun!
What is your favorite part of being a clubs volunteer?
While I don’t work in education, teaching/coaching has been a passion of mine. I love that I’m able to lead learning activities and coach the kids on their progress and development.
What is your favorite TRUE Mentors moment?
I love all the small moments you share with the kids each week. Being able to share “ah ha” learning moments from an activity, seeing the kids begin to bond and trust one another each week, etc. While it’s our goal to teach the kids each week, they truly teach me more about myself and help me be the best that I can be.
How has being a part of the TRUE Mentors community changed you? Challenged you? Rewarded you?
TRUE Mentors has changed my perspective community; I now realize the direct impact that community involvement and commitment can create. I am challenged to remain patient when things it gets hectic during clubs, or when the night goes off plan. I am rewarded with the opportunity to create relationships that truly matter with both fellow volunteers and kids.

Tell me about some of the people you’ve met while working for TRUE Mentors?
Everyone I’ve met during TRUE Mentors has been helpful, humble and so kind. I think of people like Rebecca, Katie, James and Diane who were so welcoming when I first joined and continue to be a great support system during volunteering and in personal life too. We all come from different backgrounds, but everyone I’ve met has the same commitment towards service and leadership.
What TM community events/fundraisers have you attended? Why would you encourage other TM volunteers to get involved in the TM community?
I’ve attended a few of the happy hours over the year which have been a great way to meet others in the organization. There’s so many working parts that help make True Mentors function, and these events allow each group to unite and understand how each part is integral for the larger organization to be a success.
